NORTHLANDS CELEBRATION OF RECOVERY WEEK

 

 

A celebration of recovery is an opportunity for individuals to listen to and to share with others from public and private life about the meaning and impact of recovery from alcohol and drugs in their lives and the lives of others. It is also an opportunity to gain some insight, and also to offer hope, to individuals and their families who experience at first hand the consequences of addictive behaviour.

The events are organised by Northlands – a community based charity that provides alcohol and drugs information, counselling and treatment service.

The events are open to all, although some events will have a charge.

Planned Events…


Wednesday 28th May 2008
A conference to celebrate recovery will be held at the Millennium Forum Theatre & Conference Centre Newmarket Street Derry/Londonderry from 9.30am to 4.00pm. A VIP will be in attendance to open the conference and the programme MCs will be Susan Mc Reynolds presenter from RTE Radio 1 and BBC Radio Foyle broadcaster Paul Mc Fadden. Events to include personal insights, short stories, music, promotional films and drama including guest speakers William Crawley BBC Northern Ireland journalist news and current affairs presenter of “Blueprint” and ”“William Crawley meets… as well as “Sunday Sequence”. Damian Gorman who has written extensively for TV, Radio and the stage, and Barbara Mc Narry sister of the legendary footballer George Best and also Chris Mordue Director of Training & Education at Sporting Chances rehabilitation clinic in Hertforrdshire, other guest speakers to be announced later will include contributions from alcohol and drugs rehabilitation units throughout Ireland and the UK.


Thursday 29th May 2008

The City Hotel Queens Quay Derry/ Londonderry 6.00pm to midnight, Keynote speaker will be President of Ireland Mary McAleese; also guest speaking will be a senior member of the Northern Ireland Office. This will be followed by evening meal and after dinner speech from one of Ireland’s leading folk music singer and songwriter Frances Black who will talk about her experiences with alcohol addiction and finally music from a superb local 8-piece band Pure Fresh.


Friday 30th May 2008

Street theatre performances in Cityside/Waterside locations in Derry/Londonderry illustrated by community drama project In Your Space. Nine street performers to act out through movement, rhythm and sound a characterisation of what recovery means to mum, dad, teenager, nurse, doctor, solicitor and street drinker. The event begins at 12.30pm. The performances lasting 10-15 minutes each over a 2-3 hour period will be organised for busy locations such as Foyleside, Richmond Centre, The Diamond, and Waterloo Street in the town.

Friday 30th May 2008
Art Therapy sessions facilitated by Allison Wilson & Eileen Mc Court will commence 12.30pm to 4.00pm. Venue to be announced later. Each individual session will last one hour. The maximum number of participants per session is 12 people. All age groups welcome. See press for details.

Friday 30th May 2008
This is an opportunity to enjoy live music with The Foyle Showband that will reform together for one night only. Come along to The REC CLUB (formerly the Du Pont Club) Maydown from 9.00pm-1.00am. The Foyle Showband will perform from 11.00pm-1.00pm.

Saturday 31st May 2008
This event at Waterside Theatre, Glendermott Road Derry/Londonderry that is open to individuals as well as rehabilitation and other healthcare groups focuses on self-awareness workshops, will be held where clients can explore issues around addiction (dependency, freedom, powerlessness, obsession, aggression…) on a physical level through dance movement therapy and drama therapy facilitated by Fabian Chyle MA, ADTR, at a workshop beginning 2.00pm.
Fabian Chyle, MA, ADTR, movement-/ body psychotherapist and choreographer, studied at Columbia College Chicago and at Saint Elisabeth Hospital in Washington D.C. He worked intensively in psychiatric and forensic clinical settings and various addiction programmes. Next to his therapeutic work he designed and led different trainings, focusing on anger management, anti-violence and emotional competence for a wide range of institutions. Fabian Chyle is part of the faculty of the educational programmes of the DGFT - the German Association of drama therapy.

Additional activities planned for the week include …

  • A book will be published in early May to recount the experiences of people in recovery to be published and broadcast in local media,
  • Yoga Sessions at The Millennium Forum Centre – 28th May
  • Auricular Acupuncture sessions at The Millennium Forum Centre – 28th May
  • A series of promotional videos and films to be shown, and
