On a visit to the North-West, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Shaun Woodward, dropped into the Northlands Centre. The MP talked to staff and had a look around the facilities.

At a reception held in The Everglades Hotel, Northlands commemorated the long-term dedication of two out-going directors. The event also recognised the work of two members of staff who left Northlands in 2005 and welcomed new employees who have taken-up their positions.

Maiden City Motor
Club
The Maiden City Motor Club collected
£306.00 for Northlands at the Dog Leap Rally in Limavady
in August 2005. Thanks to all the rally crews and drivers

Appointment of new staff
In January 2005 Paula Boyle joined
the staff as non-residential counsellor. Kathleen Tully took
over the outreach counselling role in Coleraine and Magherafelt
and Willie White joined the treatment team. In February Donna
Johnson was appointed as administrative officer in the Magilligan
project and in April Michelle Martin took up the Counsellor
post at Magilligan.

Christmas Day swim
The Christmas Day swim 2004 presentation
took place at Foyle Hospice on March 24 2005. We received
£2,528.00 from this event and as always are grateful
to all the swimmers and sponsors who made the swim a success.
Many thanks to all those who braved the snow at Lisfannon
Beach on Christmas Day on our behalf!

The annual Open Day took place on
Thursday 23 December 2004 in the Centre and a large number
of people called to visit and enjoyed carol singing and refreshments.

2004 Flag Days
Northlands annual Flag Days were held in
Bridgend and Muff on Saturday 4 December and in Derry on Tuesday
21 December. We were delighted that the collections this year
raised a total of £6,181.46. We would like to sincerely
thank the public for their generosity and all those collectors
who willingly gave up their own time and who braved the cold
and rain on our behalf.

| Friday 10 December 2004- Medical
Ball
Northlands was invited to Great James Street
Medical Practice, Derry on Friday 10 December and presented
with £4,638.00, a share of the proceeds from a James
Bond 007 themed Medical Ball held in the City Hotel. We are
grateful to Dr Nicola Duffy and her colleagues for this generous
donation.

| Friday 29 October 2004 - Line Dancing
An enjoyable Line Dancing evening
was held at the White Horse Hotel, Campsie and was well attended
by local groups of line dancers. We are grateful to the White
Horse Hotel for providing the venue free of charge, to the
Sperrin Kickers Line Dancers group for their support, to John
Morrow, Quigg’s Florist and The Anchor Bar for raffle
prizes, and to all who came along on the night. The amount
raised was £622.36.

| Friday 15 October 2004 - Short Drama Sketches
Students from Performing Arts at North
West Institute of Further and Higher Education performed a
variety of short drama sketches as part of a fundraising day
at Sainsbury’s on Strand Road, Derry. Thanks to all
the students and their tutor for their hard work. The amount
raised was £521.35.

Club
The Maiden City Motor Club invited
Northlands to take up a collection at the Dog Leap Rally held
on Saturday 7 August at the Recreation Grounds in Limavady.

| May 2004 - Appointment of new staff
During the month of May Northlands
welcomed three new members of staff. Sinead Duggan joined
the NYPD project as Youth Support Worker, Bill Vaughan was
appointed as Counsellor at Magilligan and Mary Shiels joined
the housekeeping team as Household Support Worker. Chris McClements
has moved to join the team at Magilligan as the Staff Training
& Programmes Worker.

long years of service to outgoing directors Dr Vincent
Kavanagh, Dr Tim McBride, William Temple and Denis Bradley.
The ceremony was held in the City Hotel in Derry and
was attended by a large number of volunteers, members,

so here are a few events for your diary.
Flag Days are:

22nd December - Northlands will
host a day of entertainment on Monday 22nd December in the
central foyer. Musicians and singers will perform throughout
the day from 11.00 am and we will also have a number of information
tables and display boards on show. Please come along and support
us.
23rd December - Northlands annual
Open Day will take place on Tuesday 23rd December in Shepherd's
Way and all are welcome. The day will commence formally around
one o' clock or so, but please feel free to drop in at any
time in the day. Please ring beforehand however, to confirm
times for the main meeting points of the day.

Lecture
“Denis Bradley, Chairman of Northlands,
chose the theme ‘Ireland – Awash with Drink’
for a public lecture in Da Vinci’s hotel. The event
received front-page advance publicity from the local newspaper
‘The Derry Journal’ under the heading “Derry’s
torrid love affair with booze”. A packed auditorium
heard Denis speak about the alarming increases in per capita
consumption of alcohol over the last ten years and you can
read his speech here.

Counsellors
“Fiona Blair
and Willie White were today appointed as counsellors for Northlands.
The funding for these three-year posts was provided by the
Major Grants Programme of the Lloyds TSB Foundation for Northern
Ireland. Fiona and Willie will concentrate on the non-residential
side of Northlands’ work and this is something the organisation
wishes to develop further in the future.

October 2003 - Community Action Team (CAT)
The work of this project is coming to an
end in October 2003. In line with the revised priorities established
for Northlands in 2001 and 2002, treatment and treatment-related
initiatives will be the central focus of our work in the future.
The CAT achieved many successes during its three years of
work, helping to establish or develop a number of community
groups throughout the North-West. Our thanks to the funders,
Community Fund, and to all the staff involved.

July - Fundraiser at Prehen Golf Club
Our thanks to Carole & Maurice Quigg

Emsley (Volunteer) attended a prize-giving ceremony on the

July - Cruise on Foyle Around
120 Northlands’ workers, volunteers and friends enjoyed
a very entertaining four-hour cruise on the River Foyle in
the Toucan One. The night was also a great fundraiser for

June - Head of Treatment Jack
Doherty was today appointed Head of Treatment for Northlands.
A member of staff since 1986, Jack brings a wealth of experience
and expertise to his new role. He will be taking forward the
change agenda developed by Northlands in recent years and
will have a key role to play in staff supervision.

June - Development Plan Northlands’
three-year development plan “A Challenge to Change”
was published today. This document sets out five key principles
for Northlands as well as objectives for action over the next
three years for each of these objectives. The plan also sets
operational objectives in ten key areas of performance for

May - Lloyds TSB Major Grants Programme Denis
Bradley and James Grant attended the launch of the Lloyds
TSB Major Grants Programme in Hillsborough Castle. Northlands
was one of only thirteen groups to receive funding from the
Major Grants Programme (Addiction & Carers were the two
themes) and one of only six groups to receive monies under
the ‘Addiction’ heading. In total, Northlands
received a £90,000 grant to be used to employ two non-residential
counsellors for the next three years. These posts form part
of Northlands longer-term strategy to establish a separate
centre for its non-residential work and to secure mainstream
funding for this part of its service. It is hoped that the
two new counsellors will be in post by the end of the summer. |

March - All-Party Working Group on Drugs Misuse
On Wednesday 26th March, Northlands welcomed
guests from Belfast City Council's All-Party Working Group
on Drugs Misuse, led by Councillor Eric Smyth. The group is
visiting organisations working in the addiction treatment
field throughout Northern Ireland with a view to establishing
a treatment unit in the Belfast area. The group spent some
time touring the centre at Shepherd’s Way. A presentation
by James Grant was followed by a question and answer session
later in the morning. Northlands was presented with a Belfast
City Council plaque at the end of the visit and we wish the
team well for their work in the future. |

March - Christmas Swim
Northlands received £1716.85 from
the Christmas Swim organised annually in aid of Northlands
and the Foyle Hospice. James Grant attended a joint presentation
at Foyle Hospice on Tuesday 25th March and photographers from
all of the local newspapers were also present.

A ‘Night at the Races’ raised

A two-day conference entitled ‘Alcohol & The Family’
organised by the North Western Health Board took place in
Letterkenny. Five staff members from Northlands attended over
the two days and Denis Bradley, Chairman of Northlands, was
