Milestones In Northland's History

 

  1975-1979 A period of development - that involved staff training, establishing a network of wide ranging contacts in the field, organising conferences and seminars.
     
  1975-1980 Awareness & Education
     
  1977 Saw the setting up of Northlands Education Team to provide alcohol education for the Youth Sector and schools in the Western Education & Library Board area.
     
  1981 Alcohol Advice Centres were set up in Strabane, Lisnaskea, Enniskillen, Coleraine, and Limavady. These centres liaised with GPs, Health Visitors, Social Workers, Probation Officers and Schools in these areas and provided an initial point of contact locally for people looking for help.
     
  1982 Addiction Studies Course
Devised by Northlands and staff from St.Conal's Hospital Letterkenny and offered at University of Ulster, Magee.
     
  1982-1987 Production of the first 'homegrown' audio-visual material
Dealing with the issues of alcohol and drug abuse, these included the prize-winning The Best Man, as well as No Problem, Druglife, and a series of six half-hour radio programmes. The award-winning film The Best Man dealt with how drinking affected the lives of "two ordinary Derry fellas".
     
  1988-1990
Awareness Campaign
Centred around sponsorship of Derry City F.C. Linked with this was the opening of Northlands' first downtown office in Magazine Street. Northlands' sponsorship of Derry City Football Club (1988-90) was a bold move to stimulate debate around the issue of drinking.
     
  1993 Opening of Northlands City Centre premises
At 13 Pump Street, housing its Education, Prevention and Training team and administration.
     
  1994-1996

Bayview Terrace; a pilot project
Providing a long-stay rehabilitation programme for those with little or no social support.

Setting up of The Nucleus
An interagency Youth Health Project in the setting of a Youth Drop-in and Entertainment Centre.

     
  1995
Opening of new Treatment Centre
At Shepherds Way, Dungiven Road, this is a joint management project with North and West Housing.
     
  1997 Consolidation of Northlands Community Team.
     
  1998 The Nucleus separates formally from Northlands to become an independent organisation in its own right. It continues to operate from 13 Pump Street in the City Centre.

The Community Action Team is set up with funding from the Community Fund (formerly the National Lottery). Funding for a programme Co-ordinator and two Facilitators/Development Workers is secured. The team operates in the Derry City Council area, Strabane and Limavady.
     
  2000

Northlands begins work in Magilligan Prison. Initially a one person initiative delivering training and information programmes on drug awareness to inmates at Magilligan. The Programme also offers one-to-one counselling.

Northlands celebrates its 25th Anniversary.

     
  2001/2002

Foyle Haven is established as a centre for street drinkers in Derry. Developed partly as a result of work done by Northlands under the EU funded URBAN scheme, the project is supported by a number of organisations and individuals concerned about the welfare of street drinkers in the city area.


Two additional staff members are recruited to the Magilligan Project, a Family Development Worker and a full-time Administrative Worker.

     
  2002 Northlands relocates all of its operations to Shepherd's Way and carries out a substantial renovation of the premises to facilitate the consolidation. The premises at Pump Street is put up for sale.
     
  2003 Two counsellors appointed to work directly in the non-residential counselling area. Northlands begins to develop this side of its work.
  2004 Visit to Northlands Residential Centre by former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds including an address by Mr Denis Bradley Chairman of Northlands: Theme Ireland awash with drink.
  2005 Research undertaken by University of Ulster at HMP Magilligan Prison regarding effectiveness of substance misuse project. Findings to be reported in 2007 Northlands Non smoking building March 2005
  2006 Visit to Northlands by Sean Woodward MP Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to view proposals for a new alcohol and drug residential treatment centre at Magilligan Prison. Oct 2006 launch counselling service for young people between ages 8-18 years
